Description

This course critically examines some of the broader social, ethical and political contexts in which early childhood education is situated. Pre-service teachers will engage with a range of contemporary ethical dilemmas facing the early childhood profession. Drawing on selected critical frameworks, pre-service teachers will analyse and critique social, political and pedagogical conditions affecting practice. The course will complement learning in other courses in the Bachelor of Teaching and Learning (Early Childhood), including Professional Practice.

Learning Outcomes

On the successful completion of AKOE372, students will be able to:
1. Critique early childhood education as a contested profession

2. Demonstrate the effective use of critical frameworks for engaging with complex ethical dilemmas

3. Critically analyse the ways social, ethical and political and pedagogical conditions shape early childhood education in Aotearoa

Prerequisites

45 points from 200 level AKOE or AKOT
