Description

This course supports pre-service teachers to understand and apply the holistic, bicultural early childhood curriculum Te Whariki. Pre-service teachers will engage with theoretical and practical frameworks for responsive teaching in early years teaching. These frameworks will take account of learners’ diverse backgrounds and draw on local contexts. Pre-service teachers will examine assessment frameworks, intentional and pedagogical strategies to support the development of learning dispositions and working theories. Pre-service teachers will implement principles of assessment that recognise the important role of responsive and reciprocal nga hononga relationships. The central role of identities and knowledges in fostering interests and learning of tamariki will be critically examined in the context of early childhood settings. The course will complement learning in other courses in the Bachelor of Teaching and Learning (Early Childhood), including Professional Practice.
