This course will be taught bilingually: in te reo Maori and English. This course explores a range of marau and aromatawai (including and not limited to Nga Whanaketanga and Te Whatu Pokeka) linked to Maori medium contexts. Interdisciplinary learning with a strong focus on pangarau and te reo matatini and also intertwining other curriculum areas (kaupapa based learning) will be explored.
On the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:1. Demonstrate an understanding of a range of marau, linking documents and aromatawai in both puna kōhungahunga and kura Māori contexts.2. Notice, respond, and revisit working theories around teaching and learning of te reo Matatini and pāngarau in Māori medium early childhood and primary contexts.3. Explore different marau, strategies and policy through a te ao Māori lens and through the context of the marae. 4. Demonstrate an understanding of the pōwhiri process, and tikanga o te marae as well as enact different roles on the marae and during pōwhiri and poro waewae.

Attendance and Engagement (Distance students)Full attendance and participation in the on-site intensive programme, Tiriti o Waitangi workshops, and noho marae are compulsory requirements of the programme. Students are required to actively engage with all course content and activities including Zoom workshops, lecture recordings, readings, online modules, and any other requirements specified by the course coordinator, in order to meet the learning outcomes of the course.Students are expected to notify lecturers in writing (e.g. email message) prior to their absence, with an explanation. For extended absences (3 or more days), students should apply to the course coordinator. Extended absences must be accompanied by supporting evidence, e.g. medical certificate.
