Description

This course focuses on evidence-based pedagogies and practices for effective teaching and learning of literacy and mathematics for primary years. There will be a specific emphasis on the teaching and learning of foundational knowledge and skills in literacy and mathematics. Pre-service teachers will be introduced to pedagogical and assessment practices in mathematics and literacy, while building their own content knowledge.

Learning Outcomes

On the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Identify and explain the role of cultural competencies as outlined in Tātaiako and Tapasā when teaching and assessing mathematics and English literacy
2. Describe and use effective pedagogies and practices to meet learners' needs in mathematics and literacy, particularly foundational knowledge and skills.
3. Examine and demonstrate content knowledge and concepts required for effective teaching in literacy and mathematical learning
4. Design teaching and learning for mathematics and literacy informed by the current curriculum
5. Explore a variety of formative and summative assessment practices when designing learning in mathematics and literacy
