This course introduces pre-service teachers to contemporary thinking related to Learning Languages and Social Sciences education in primary schools in Aotearoa/New Zealand. Students will engage with theoretical and practical frameworks for responsive teaching in Social Sciences and Learning Languages that take account of learners’ diverse backgrounds and draw on local contexts. Students will examine pedagogical strategies, assessment activities and resources to support their development of the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to facilitate effective learning opportunities in these two learning areas. The course will complement learning in other courses in the Bachelor of Teaching and Learning (Primary), including Professional Practice.
On the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:1. Demonstrate an understanding of the rationale, structure, conceptual and theoretical foundations of the Learning Languages and Social Sciences learning areas.2. Explain how the vision, principles, values and key competencies underpinning The New Zealand Curriculum are enacted through Learning Languages and Social Sciences, and the inter-relationship's with other learning areas and with the provisions of te Tiriti o Waitangi.3. Demonstrate an understanding of pedagogy and practices underpinning the effective design, implementation, assessment and evaluation of the Learning Languages and Social Sciences learning areas. 4. Identify and critique a range of contextually relevant resources to support teaching and learning in and beyond the classroom for the Learning Languages and Social Sciences learning areas.
