This course supports pre-service teacher development of curriculum knowledge and pedagogy of teaching science and technology in schools in Aotearoa New Zealand. Pre-service teachers explore science and technology education through engagement in future focussed themes and issues situated in authentic contexts, local curriculum, and Matauranga Maori and Matauranga-a-iwi. Pre-service teachers will successfully plan, resource, implement, assess and evaluate the learning areas of science and technology. The course will complement learning in other courses in the Primary endorsement, including Professional Practice.

Assessment

Assessment Due Date Percentage  Description
Learning Portfolio - Developing a Science and Technology Teacher Identity 50% The first part of the course encourages you to develop a practical understanding and identity for the teaching and learning of Science and Technology in New Zealand primary schools. You will construct a learning portfolio (template provided) which consists of responses to reflective questions based on your learning through lectures, workshops, online modules, and readings. Your responses will incorporate your own thoughts and questions, connections to readings, and artefacts of your learning.
Living Landscape Feature: Integration and Collaboration in Science and Technology 50% With a partner you will design a living landscape feature from the perspective of intermediate learners in a given school setting with certain client requirements. You will then complete a critical reflection on the experience of designing an integrated learning experience in Science and Technology. This is a collaborative, action-oriented inquiry in an authentic, environmental sustainability context with the challenge of designing a technological outcome for the local curriculum.

Gaining a perspective for Assignment 1 and 2
There are two assignments in this course, that is designed to develop the rationale, philosophy and pedagogy of teaching Science and Technology in New Zealand primary schools. Key aspects of these assignments combine the curriculum learning areas of Science and Technology using an authentic context. We begin this journey by looking to gain a perspective on the questions of why, what and how of the teaching in each of these two learning areas of the NZC. Assessment 1 will be completed individually and Assessment 2 will be completed in pairs. This collaboration will be important in helping you develop, consolidate and utilise essential twenty-first century skills and dispositions.
