Description

This course will be taught and assessed in English and in Te Reo Maori. This course aims to further advance pronunciation and communicative competence of pre-service teachers in te reo Maori. Learning will be based on scaffolded conversational and contextual opportunities to engage in te reo Maori consistent with the level 3 achievement objectives of Te Aho Arataki Marau - TAAM (the Maori Language Curriculum for mainstream New Zealand schools) and in accordance with the kaupapa whakahaere | principles of Te Whariki (The Early Childhood Curriculum). Pre-service teachers will be able to demonstrate an understanding of te reo Maori me nga tikanga-a-iwi applicable to a variety of formal and informal learning contexts with whanau and community with increased ability and confidence.

Learning Outcomes

On the successful completion of this course, pre-service teachers will be able to:

1. Demonstrate communicative competence in te reo Māori (me ōna tikanga) at beginner level 3 (TAAM).
2. Self-reflect critically on their own Māori language developmental needs and teaching competence with regard to principles of Te Whāriki and/or Tataiako.
3. Demonstrate competence to use and teach te reo Māori authentically in teaching practice at level 3 (TAAM).
4. Apply tikanga Māori and mātauranga Māori authentically, in educational contexts, and reflect critically on their own application.

Oral Assessment 30% This assessment is conducted in an online meeting and involves students demonstrating skills in te reo Maori grammar and pronunciation when introducing themselves, and when asking and answering basic questions. This assessment will also examine student's understanding of tikanga concepts that are often applied in educational settings in Aotearoa New Zealand, and the considerations when teaching purakau. Due: 13-17 July 2026
Planning Task 31 Jul 2026 15% This assessment task requires students to plan a short, effective te reo Maori lesson with relevant curriculum links.
Teaching Task 21 Oct 2026 25% This assessment requires students to submit a short video of themselves teaching a planned te reo Maori lesson, showing their ability to teach te reo Maori concepts, and use te reo Maori in a teaching setting.
