This course reviews the evolution of jazz as an art form from its earliest origins, through a study of the personalities, styles and key elements, to its emergence as a major international musical phenomenon.
This course reviews the evolution of jazz as an art form from its earliest origins, through a study of the personalities, styles and key elements, to its emergence as a major international musical phenomenon.The basic elements of the sociological, cultural and racial influences on the development of the jazz genre together with the historic events which have shaped the current jazz scene are reviewed in chronological form. Throughout the course, listening analysis and recordings of major jazz exponents/performances are studied and a variety of audio and written research skills are learned to enable students to gather, collate and present esential information in oral and written form.
