This introductory course focuses on biology and explores how plants, animals and humans adapt to living in the extreme environments of the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic with low temperatures and periods of total darkness. The course includes psychology, human interaction with, and invention in, the polar region.
This 3 point course provides a wide-ranging introduction to Antarctica and the Southern Ocean focusing on the biological environment. The course is taught using a multidisciplinary approach and has a substantial distance learning component.
This 3 point course provides a wide-ranging introduction to Antarctica and the Southern Ocean focusing on the biological environment. The course is taught using a multidisciplinary approach and has a substantial distance learning component: 21 lectures that are available via WebCT or VHS Videos. Students watch these lectures in their own time, either at home or in the UC Central Library. The remainder of the course consists of 5 compulsory discussion sessions on Wednesday from 5-6pm.The main topics that will be covered include:" Human interactions with and aspirations for Antarctica" Southern ocean fish and fisheries" Life in cold conditions" Life in Antarctic lakes and streams" SubAntarctic Islands and ecosystems" Birds
