Description

The research paper will normally involve empirical research, rather than archival or library research, conducted under the guidance of a supervisor, and result in a report not exceeding 12,000 words in length. This paper is compulsory for students wanting to enrol in the Anthropology Honours programme.

This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to anthropological research and its various fieldwork methods, and to enable students to put these into practice. Each student, assisted by a supervisor, is required to select a research problem or topic, carry out required background reading, formulate appropriate research questions, choose or design methods appropriate to obtaining the data required to answer the questions, write a research proposal, carry out the research, present a progress report, and finally to analyse the material collected and write a final report detailing the research process and the results obtained, making reference to appropriate anthropological literature. The project will normally involve fieldwork rather than library or archival research, and the written report shall consist of a maximum of 12,000 words. Each student will present three seminar papers in the course of the year, as indicated below.
