Description

Execution and write-up of selected laboratory experiments.

Physics is an experimental science. The quantum Hall effect and high-temperature superconductivity are fairly recent examples of unforeseen discoveries by experimenters. A familiarity with some principles and practical aspects of experimental physics is of fundamental importance and frequently of considerable value to employers. The analysis and intepretation of astronomical observations can develop complementary skills.

The 300-level laboratories are based on a selection of set experiments, field station visits and mini-projects.

Note: This occurence  is offered by invitation only, via the Head of Department.

Prerequisites

(1) PHYS281 and PHYS282 or PHYS283; (2) 22 points from any of the following courses PHYS221-226, ASTR211, ASTR212; (3) MATH109 or equivalent.
