(1) PHYS285; (2) 30 points from PHYS201-206 including either PHYS202 or PHYS205). (3) MATH103 or EMTH119. RP: MATH201

Assessment Due Date Percentage  Description
Reports and subsidiary files 20% For two introductory experiments which are data acquisition (LabVIEW) and data analysis (Matlab). These must be completed in first two weeks of term 3 and reports are due two weeks after scheduled laboratory.
10 Week Research Project 80% The report for this project is due to be handed in by 5:00 pm Friday 20th October 2017. The assessment breakdown for this 80% component of the course is: 20% A short oral presentation (a 10 min talk) in the first week of term 4 which presents the project goals, a literature review and progress to date. 60 % A 15 page report in the style of a scientific paper due on the last day of term (20th October 2017), which will be marked by both your academic supervisor and another academic from the physics department.


The course is marked out of 120 (assessment breakdown above is as %), which you can think of as 10 marks per week for 12 weeks.  

65 marks for submitted reports and subsidiary files for experiments as listed in the Choice of Experiments section of the course outline.

15 marks for oral presentation of a project you have undertaken, in the middle of Term 4.

40 marks for a formal report in the style of a scientific paper on the project.  This is due at the end of Term 4.
