The Better Start Literacy Approach (BSLA) is an evidence-based framework for facilitating early literacy success in young tamariki. Successful implementation of the BSLA requires literacy leaders skilled in understanding data, change processes, and supporting kaiako and kura to implement the assessment and teaching with fidelity through a coaching and mentoring model. Completion of this course will provide participants with the skills and resources required to lead structured literacy implementation in their chosen kura, kahui ako or cluster.
On the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:- Demonstrate application of advanced, specialist linguistic knowledge and skills.- Analyse and interpret literacy assessment data to inform strategic decision-making and support evidence-based teaching.- Critically reflect on application of specialist knowledge to lead implementation of structured literacy practices in selected school contexts.- Integrate specialised knowledge of early literacy interventions to identify learners requiring additional support.
