Effective structured literacy teaching during primary school is essential for setting children up on a pathway to academic, social and vocational success. The Better Start Literacy Approach for upper primary incorporates best practices for structured literacy teaching in phonics; phonological awareness; morphological awareness; orthography; reading fluency, rate and comprehension; and oral narrative. Completion of this course will provide participants with the skills and resources required to implement structured literacy teaching for Years 4-8 learners in their chosen kura, kahui ako or cluster.
On the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:- Demonstrate application of advanced, specialist linguistic knowledge and skills.- Interpret and synthesise assessment data (e.g., phonological awareness, decoding, spelling, reading comprehension, oral narrative) to identify progress in response to teaching.- Critically reflect on implementation of structured literacy instruction tailored to large-group and small-group contexts for learners in Years 4–8.- Integrate specialised knowledge of early literacy interventions to identify learners requiring additional support.
