Effective literacy instruction lays the foundation for children's long-term academic achievement and life outcomes. The Better Start Literacy Approach (BSLA) integrates evidence-based practices in phonics, phonological awareness, reading, writing, spelling, and language to support literacy success. This course equips teachers and other professionals in specialist teaching contexts with the knowledge, practical tools, and resources needed to deliver high-quality, structured literacy support to learners with complex communication and learning needs.
On the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:- Demonstrate application of advanced, specialist linguistic knowledge and skills.- Interpret and synthesise assessment data (e.g., phonological awareness, alphabet knowledge, decoding, spelling, and oral narrative skills) to identify strengths and needs and monitor progress in response to teaching.- Critically reflect on implementation of structured literacy instruction tailored to learners with complex communication and learning needs.- Integrate specialised knowledge of literacy interventions within specialist teaching settings.
