Reactivity and properties of important functional groups. Stereochemistry and conformational analysis, acidity and basicity, electrophilic and nucleophilic reactions involving unsaturated systems and aromatic compounds, free radical reactions, polymerisation.
The aim of this course is to develop an understanding of the importance of molecular structure and reactivity in organic chemistry. Emphasis will be placed on the mechanisms of organic reactions involving various functional groups, with applications to multi-step organic synthesis. Throughout the course examples of naturally occurring compounds will be use to emphasise the relevance of organic chemistry to everyday life. The course will expand and develop the concepts introduced in CHEM112.
(1) CHEM111 or CHEM113 or CHEM121; and (2) CHEM112 or CHEM115; and (3) subject to approval of the Head of Department.
