This course, following CHIN251 and still focusing on the four basic language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, is a Chinese language course, teaching how to communicate Chinese in social and semi-formal situations at an intermediate level, with an adequate cultural understanding of China.
The course aims to develop students’ ability of conducting daily and social conversations and reading in Mandarin Chinese as well as producing (by typing) texts in the language at an early intermediate level, with an adequate cultural understanding societies where people use Mandarin Chinese as a mainstream language.
As a student in this course, you will acquire skills in all four areas of the language (reading, writing, speaking and listening). By the end of the course, successful students should have acquired an early intermediate level of Mandarin Chinese language proficiency, which will allow them to continue to study the language at the upper intermediate and advanced levels. They should know and be able to use the basic sentence structures in Mandarin Chinese and about 280 words/expressions in addition to the characters (either in the simplified or traditional font) that are included in 100 level Chinese courses. Within the topics included in this language course, successful students should be able to understand utterances directed to them and express themselves clearly (and naturally) by using sentence structures and vocabulary they have learned. They should be able to read very short and simple texts with the aid of a dictionary and type very short letters and compositions. Successful students should have obtained the basic language skills with which they communicate with people in a natural Mandarin speaking environment by themselves.

CHIN251 or placement test. Students who have learnt more than 600 Chinese characters, orhave a level of spoken Chinese equivalent to the required achievement of students when finishing CHIN252 will not be admitted to the course.
