This course builds on the language skills that students have acquired in the previous three years. Reading materials will include various topics and styles. Students are expected to summarise the reading in their own words, both oral and written, and to write reviews and essays in Chinese.
This course builds on the language skills acquired in CHIN352 and further develops and consolidates the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in Chinese. The course will cover four topics in relation to the Chinese-speaking socio-cultural context including indigenous people, family, technology and translation. The course materials are written texts and video clips for Chinese native speakers. Students will be required to participate in online discussions, do oral presentations, conduct student-led discussions, and write a short essay in Chinese.
At the completion of this course, students are expected to have achieved the following:In general, they should have a good mastery of the vocabulary and sentence patterns taught in the course. They should be able to use these words and sentence patterns to conduct meaningful conversations with a native speaker and to be able to deliver abstract ideas with expressions and sentence structures covered in the course. By learning a foreign language, students will develop more understanding of global conditions, will become competent in engaging with global and multi-cultural contexts, and will be aware of and understand the nature of biculturalism in Aotearoa New Zealand and its relevance to their study of the foreign language. This will help the language students to critically evaluate and, where applicable, apply the knowledge and attributes sought by employers that can be used in a range of applications.
