Continued study of selected Latin texts and unseen passages, with emphasis on the development of knowledge of the language.
The aim of this course is to build on students’ understanding of Latin, introduce them to key texts of Latin literature and enhance their grasp of the language in its grammatical and stylistic components. Authors studied usually include one or more of the following: Catullus, Vergil, Horace, Cicero, Ovid, Livy, Tacitus, Petronius, Suetonius, et al. - some of the greatest, most profound and insightful writers in European history. The course also aims to encourage a critically-informed approach to Latin literature in its broader cultural context and to explore how these authors engaged with myth, other literary genres, history, and social and political issues of the day. In most weeks three hours of class time per week will be dedicated to work on literary texts: translation and discussion of passages prepared with the help of commentaries and other resources. In other weeks there will be two hours on literary texts and one hour on improving students’ skills in translating unseen texts.
