This course focuses on the impact of colonisation on traditional Maori society. Topics include first contact; religion and spiritual beliefs, God vs Gods; war, Musket Wars vs Traditional Taua; sovereignty, Settler Government vs Kingitanga and Kotahitanga; prophets, guerrilla warfare vs passive resistance; changes in economic and social life, kumara vs potato; education, te reo vs English. The course looks at the impacts of colonisation on Maori in contemporary times. Students are encouraged to research a topic of their choosing.
Any 22 points in Maori and Indigenous Studies or their double-coded equivalents or 44 points at 200-level in HIST or Ancient History (CLAS214, CLAS215, CLAS216, CLAS217) or ANTH or RELS. Students without these prerequisites but with 80 points in appropriate courses may enter the course with the approval of the Head of Department.
