Description

This course covers the development of statistical concepts and their application to complex systems.

The development of the ideas, techniques and applications of statistics and probability. The emphasis is on applying statistics to problems, selecting sensible techniques, following the methodology and interpreting the results. Understanding the concepts and computer-based solutions are emphasised and data science applications to commerce, the social sciences, the humanities, science and engineering are considered. Particular topics include data analysis, summary statistics, probability, statistical distributions, estimation and inference (including confidence intervals, hypothesis tests and modelling).

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will be able to:
  • understand a range of statistical concepts in:
     o data analysis: uncertainty, variation, summary statistics;
     o probability: meaning of probability, sets, events and distributions;
     o estimation: samples, populations, parameters, estimates and uncertainty;
     o inference: hypotheses, tests, test statistics, test interpretations.

  • perform and interpret a range of statistical procedures in:
     o data analysis: summary statistics and graphics;
     o probability: calculations and identification/application of distributions;
     o estimation: estimation of parameters and confidence intervals;
     o inference: hypothesis tests and model building.

  • use Excel in performing statistical calculations and producing diagrams;

  • identify applications of statistics in data science.
