Description

This course is designed to provide current and aspiring educational leaders with a theoretical framework for managing learning and teaching in their institutions, with particular focus on provision of programmes to cater for the diverse learning needs of students. An analysis of research findings on a variety of teaching and learning approaches will lead course participants to increase their range of strategies for working with diverse learners.

Learning Outcomes for EDEL803

Participants who have passed this course will be able to:

1. apply knowledge and understandings of the diversity of students and their learning needs in planning for learning and teaching and critically review research reports from the Ministry of Education on aspects of learner diversity;

2. critically analyse the characteristics of effective teachers in catering for the learning needs of diverse learners;

3. use research findings on learning and teaching to analyse the effectiveness of the teacher and the achievement of diverse learners;

4. critically review curriculum planning, teaching and support in meeting the learning needs of the diversity of learners;

5. formulate strategies for identifying and addressing barriers to learning in their workplace e.g. ethnicity and culture, gender, school environment, special education;

6. apply the Ministry of Education guidelines for the management of truancy, stand-downs and suspensions, drug and alcohol issues and special education resourcing;

7. produce action plans to address identified barriers to learning in their workplace;

8. apply the principles of managing change when implementing a significant development to improve teaching and learning in their workplace.
