Group, Family and Systems Interventions
An examination of the theory and practice of group counselling, family counselling and organisational structure.Although this course is administratively separate from EDUC662 (Counselling Skills), you will find it useful to draw on material from both courses during the year. EDUC658 has a balance of theory, experiential learning and practice
Specific aims:a) To understand the theoretical foundations of group counselling, including stages of group development and group leadership;b) To learn and implement effective principles and practices of group work;c) To understand families and relationships as systems and be able to work with them to achieve their desired changes; d) To extend your view of counselling to incorporate approaches that are additional to the one-to-one setting;e) To encourage you to use self-reflection to inform and influence your practice.
Selection based on academic record, personal suitability, and an interview organised by the Coordinator of Counsellor Education. The closing date for applications is normally October 1 in the year prior to enrolment.
EDUC658
(1) Must be completed concurrently with EDEM672. These two courses require four hours of class time per week, plus placement experience of one half-day per week. (2) Must be completed concurrently with EDEM664 or after having completed EDEM664 or EDUC661.

Attendance at the classes is mandatory. Students who fail to attend 90% of classes FOR WHATEVER REASON will have to repeat the course.

Unless there are exceptional circumstances, usually an illness with supporting doctor's certificate, all extensions attract a one grade penalty (eg from A to A-) per week or part thereof. Maximum extension granted is 2 weeks.
The due dates are ‘firm’. If you cannot comlete the assignment by 5.00 p.m. on the due date you may have 14 days to submit it. This will incur a pealty of one grade(i.e., from B+ to B) per week. No assignment can be accepted once other students’ marked assignments have been returned to them.
Students may apply to resubmit any failed assignment. A penalty of one grade will apply.
Assignments should be handed in to the lecturer at the Tuesday class meetings.
