Description

The aim of this course is to provide postgraduate training in educational research methods that involve single case experimental designs of various kinds. The course includes training in the construction of repeated measures of learning and behaviour change, the design of single case experimental measures of the effects of teaching and other types of interventions on learning and behaviour change, and techniques for presenting the results of such experiments. The course aims to bring students to the point where they can embark with confidence on masters level thesis research into questions that are most appropriately studied using these procedures.

Learning Outcomes

  • Course members who successfully complete the course requirements will demonstrate
  • knowledge of the historical development of single case methods in the study of learning and
     teaching and the ability to discriminate between research questions which can and cannot be    
     addressed using single case designs.
  • understanding of the concepts of validity, accuracy, reliability, replication, and generality in
     experimental design
  • knowledge of the principles of accurate and reliable direct observation procedures
  • knowledge of the principles of accurate probe testing and the ability to write probe tests
  • knowledge and understanding of the assumptions underlying the baseline logic, direct
     replication, and systematic replication
  • ability to understand and to interpret the results of a sample of reports illustrating a range of
     different types of single case experimental studies
  • ability to describe  a range of commonly used single case designs, the assumptions underlying
     each, and the strengths and weakness of each
  • ability to list and explain common threats to the internal validity of single case experiments
  • ability to present the results of a single case experiment in an appropriate formatted graph
  • ability to generate a research proposal which, given an appropriate research question, describes and justifies the research question, describes and justifies an appropriate measure of treatment effects, and describes and justifies an appropriate single case design to measure those effects
