Description

This course introduces contemporary, research-based perspectives on teaching, learning and communication in the mathematical sciences. Students will examine the benefits and drawbacks of traditional and emerging approaches to mathematics learning, with a focus on methods that promote both excellence and equity. Students will also learn about effective communication of mathematical sciences information to non-specialists in multi-disciplinary professional settings.

Learning Outcomes

On the successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Describe and evaluate influential perspectives on mathematics education
2. Communicate clearly with non-specialists drawing on advanced concepts from the mathematical sciences
3. Apply learning about teaching and learning mathematical sciences to the design of tutoring or teaching
4. Evaluate the use of particular approaches to mathematical sciences teaching and learning in terms of equity considerations and overall effectiveness

Prerequisites

30 points from 200-level courses selected from: COSC, DATA, MATH, and STAT
