Description

This course is an introduction to frameworks for thinking about, reading about, and carrying out research. Students will develop skills in the critical analysis of a wide range of research literature through developing knowledge of ethics, different methodologies, and different types of data. Students are introduced to research practice from both 'Western' and Indigenous knowledge standpoints. The aims of the course are to bring the student to the point where they have the knowledge to interpret most quantitative and qualitative research papers in their field, as well as the background to undertake supervised research.

Learning Outcomes

  • On the successful completion of this course participants will be able to:
  • Critically interrogate research literature with a specific focus on rigour, interpreting findings and assessing conclusions
  • Understand, and discuss, the ethical and cultural expectations for undertaking educational research across different knowledge standpoints
  • Examine how the ontological and theoretical position of the researcher influences the research questions and study methodology
  • Discuss data collection and data analysis methods and how they are used to address research questions
  • Develop a thesis proposal, including research problem and questions, literature review and methodology
