This level 8 course is an introductory course for future English language teachers who have minimal or some previous experience working with students who learn English as a second/foreign/additional language (hereinafter L2). It is also suitable for in-service teachers with considerable experience but little previous training on teaching L2 English learners. The course aims to enable English language teachers to acquire advanced knowledge and understanding of current L2 acquisition theories and pedagogy, demonstrate essential knowledge of English structures, identify and critically analyse the impact of contextual and individual factors on L2 learning and teaching, and apply fundamental knowledge of applied linguistics in analysing learner language. Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to systematically examine their own L2 teaching practices, reflect on the nature of teaching English at present, and evaluate the practicality of current L2 theories and methodologies for their specific teaching contexts.
