Description

This is a compulsory 100 level course. It focuses on the Maori dimension - te reo me ona tikanga and enables both Maori and non-Maori students to develop an awareness of Maori language and culture. The course also introduced students to the requirements of Tihe Mauri Ora! - Maori Language Junior Classes to Form 2 and Te Ata Hapara.

Learning Outcomes

  • LEARNING OUTCOMES:

    By the conclusion of this course, the successful student will be able to:

  • use basic Māori  language for 'beginners' extending to a level of proficiency sufficient to enhance and extend personal abilities and to develop an awareness of Māori  culture and knowledge of Te Reo Māori in the New Zealand Curriculum.

  • design and construct a lesson plan which demonstrates appropriate language teaching experiences, that is based on the language within Te Reo Māori in the New Zealand Curriculum and the revised version of Te Ata Hāpara  1 - A starter language course for teachers, and He Pukapuka Ako Tahi

  • explore and recall pakiwaitara (myths and legends) suitable for use in primary schools and develop an awareness of the significance of the oral tradition in Māori  storytelling and in relation to Māori  place names

  • study and demonstrate the kawa appropriate to a local marae (in preparation for Year 2 noho marae visit) and other settings, (school, teaching institution) and be aware of the tikanga involved.

  • learn and perform waiata appropriate for formal occasions, language learning and teaching situations.

ASSESSMENT

Assessment will be achievement based.  Grades and descriptive comments will be provided in accordance with the University of Canterbury College of Education Assessment Policy and the criteria for assessment provided at the beginning of the course. Course assessment will be moderated according to the qualification Moderation Action Plan.

EVALUATION.
Students will be encouraged to provide on-going, formative evaluation to course lecturers. The course will also be formally evaluated in accordance with the cycle set out in the qualification Moderation Action Plan and the results reported to the Advisory Committee.

Notes

COURSE REQUIREMENTS.

Students must attend and participate in the course sufficiently to meet the learning outcomes.  If more than three classes are missed, without a reasonable excuse, there will be a grade penalty and catch up tasks will be required to demonstrate the learning that was missed.

Oral presentation 1: consists of three parts: [50%]
• Basic mihi
• Reading a list of Māori  Place Names
• Speaking from your research on the significance and relevance of myths and traditions in relation to a Māori place name.

Oral presentation 2: [50%]
• Mihi
• Tasks requiring students to apply their knowledge of pronunciation of te Reo Māori using a Māori dictionary.
