Description

This is a compulsory 200 level course which focuses on consolidating and extending the skills acquired in EDMI145. Emphasis will be given to oral and written Maori, and tikanga as a foundation for working within early childhood. The threads which are included in this course are: the Treaty of Waitangi and bicultural development; gender equity and multiculturalism; the particular needs of infants and toddlers. These will be addressed through the use of Te Whaariki - Early Childhood Curriculum.

Learning Outcomes

    By the conclusion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Extend te reo Māori vocabulary and structures, and waiata acquired in EDMI 145 (or equivalent).

  • Participate in tikanga applicable to marae.


    Ngā Marau Akoranga / Course Content

  • Marae-based tikanga will be modelled and adhered to in each session including karakia, waiata and mihi.

  • Grammar, sentence construction and application of phrases.

  • Noho marae with associated activities/experiences/events.

Assessment of this course will be achievement-based.  Grades will be provided in accordance with the University of Canterbury College of Education Assessment Policy.  Refer to the relevant University of Canterbury publication for details.

Formal and informal evaluation will take place in accordance with the relevant Course Evaluation Policy, to provide feedback to teaching staff about the relevance and validity of what has been learned, as well as the quality of the course delivery.

Ngā Tikanga Akoranga / Course Requirements

Resources and set texts (including a cost for noho marae) will be at the student’s expense.

For course requirements refer to the assessment policy and procedures outlined in the relevant University of Canterbury publication, plus satisfactory completion of each assignment to at least a C grade.

Students must attend and participate in the course sufficiently to meet the learning outcomes.  Insufficient attendance at course sessions may prevent a student from attending teaching practice or may impact on course assessment.  Attendance is compulsory at specified sessions.
