Description

Kaupapa Maori pedagogies will explore indigenous ways of being, doing, thinking and transferring knowledge. This course will aid in understanding traditional Maori pedagogies, purakau and histories in order to approriately embed aspects of these traditional methods in our contemporary teaching and learning programmes.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Demonstrate proficiency in te reo Māori me ōna tikanga. Kaiako will strengthen their Māori language knowledge and capacity. Māori concepts and language for the classroom/ wāhi ako, will be taught to support relationship building and culturally responsive pedagogy.
2. Reflect on and understands one’s own world view and cultural identity and in order to understand others.
3. Develop an understanding of traditional Māori pedagogies, including ways of knowing, ways of being and ways of teaching and learning and how these can be embedded in contemporary teaching and learning programmes.
4. Describe socio-cultural theories, kaupapa Māori approaches and wider indigenous cultural underpinnings that might influence teaching and learning programmes.
5. Strengthen engagement with whānau and the local hapori to ensure cultural narratives including local stories are embedded in curriculum including links to the Ngāi Tahu Cultural Standards.
