This is a compulsory 300 level course that focuses on consolidating and extending the skills acquired in EDMI142 and EDMI253. Emphasis will be given to oral and written Maori, tikanga as a foundation for working within early childhood, and broadening students' understanding of Maori issues within education, and the wider community. Opportunity will be given for students to participate in and demonstrate marae tikanga. The threads which are included in this course are: the Treaty of Waitangi and bicultural development; gender equity and multiculturalism; the particular needs of infants and toddlers; These will be addressed through the use of Te Whaariki - Early Childhood Curriculum.
Hua Ako / Learning OutcomesBy the conclusion of the course students will be able to:Extend te reo Māori vocabulary, sentence structures and waiata acquired in EDMI 254 or equivalent and demonstrate oral competency appropriate for early childhood settings.Participate in and adhere to marae-based tikanga including noho marae.Explore and present an issue from te ao Māori.

Ngā Tikanga Akoranga / Course Requirements Resources and set texts (including a cost for noho marae) will be at the student’s expense.For course requirements refer to the assessment policy and procedures outlined in the relevant University of Canterbury publication, plus satisfactory completion of each assignment to at least a C grade.Attendance at class sessions is expected throughout the course. Insufficient attendance at course sessions may prevent a student from attending teaching practice or may impact on course assessment. Attendance is compulsory at specified sessions
