This professional practice course is compulsory for BTchLn students. It presents the opportunity for the student to apply, develop and demonstrate the theoretical and practical learning outcomes from College-based courses, in particular the co-requisite Professional Studies course, while under the professional supervision of a registered classroom teacher and a College lecturer.
LEARNING OUTCOMESThe learning outcomes for this course are drawn from each student’s set of Curriculum and Professional Education courses, and match those of the co-requisite Professional Studies course.By the end of this course the students will have:1. used the design process to plan for, implement, assess, evaluate and whole class teaching, including the unit of work approach, in at least four essential learning areas.2. planned for, implemented, assessed and evaluated children’s learning in the curriculum areas of English and Mathematics3. developed constructive professional relationships with colleagues, parents and pupils4. assumed full management of the learning of a whole class for at least three consecutive days.5. used critical reflection skills to assess current and future professional needs and development

Pass/fail assessment applies to Professional Practice courses, in accordance with the College of Education assessment guidelines. The assessment is determined by the student’s Professional Practice lecturer following the collection, analysis and discussion of all information with the student at the end of the placement. This information includes the associate teacher’s written report and the observing lecturer’s written notes and verbal report. A summary statement is written in collaboration with the student as an outcome of the post-placement interview, and goals for the next placement identified. This summary statement, along with the student’s assessment for this course, is placed on the student’s record in the Registry.
