Professional Studies is a core component of the BTchLn and consists of a series of compulsory courses which are designed to assist students to identify and address professional needs. EDPS151 is the introductory course in this series and it has a focus on observing and interacting effectively with primary school age children.
Professional Studies is a core component of the BTchLn (Primary) and consists of a series of compulsory courses which are designed to assist students to identify and address professional needs in relation to learning outcomes. This process establishes links between professional practice experiences, pedagogy and learning theory taught by the University of Canterbury College of Education, and these links are further supported by the knowledge and skills students gain in Curriculum Studies and other Professional Education courses. EDPS151 is the introductory course in this series and it has a focus on observing and interacting effectively with primary school age children.RATIONALEProfessional Studies courses contribute to the development of confident, competent, informed and innovative beginning teachers for New Zealand primary, intermediate and area schools, by emphasising pedagogical knowledge and the processes necessary for professional development as a teacher. These processes are identified as observing, interacting, designing appropriate learning experiences, managing, assessing/evaluating and reflecting.
By the end of this course, successful students will be able to:use a range of appropriate observation strategies to identify teacher and learner behavioursinterpret principles of child development in explaining teacher strategies and learner behavioursdemonstrate effective interaction skills with children, peers, lecturers and associate teachersuse planned and appropriate questioning sequences that challenge children’s thinkingdemonstrate simple management techniquesuse the design process to plan for, implement, assess and evaluate learningdemonstrate a basic understanding of the legal and ethical requirements of teachersdemonstrate knowledge of the New Zealand Curriculum Framework document

Assessment of this course will be competency based. Pass/Fail grades and comments will be provided in accordance with the College of Education assessment guidelines and the criteria for assessment provided for students at the beginning of the course. Course assessment will be moderated according to the qualification Moderation Action Plan.
