Professional Studies is a core compulsory component of the BTchLn and consists of a series of courses which are designed to assist students to identify and meet professional needs. EDPS152 has a focus on understanding how children learn and how teachers can manage this process.
Professional Studies is the core component of the BTchLn(Primary) and consists of a series of compulsory courses which are designed to assist students to identify and address professional needs in relation to learning outcomes. This process establishes links between professional practice experiences, pedagogy and learning theory, taught by the University of Canterbury and these links are further supported by the knowledge and skills students gain in Curriculum Studies and other Professional Education courses. EDPS152 builds on the learning outcomes of EDPS151 and has a focus on understanding and applying different models of teaching.RATIONALEProfessional Studies courses contribute to the development of confident, competent, informed and innovative beginning teachers for New Zealand primary, intermediate and area schools, by emphasising pedagogical knowledge and the processes necessary for professional development as a teacher. These processes are identified as observing, interacting, designing appropriate learning experiences, managing, assessing/evaluating and reflecting.
By the end of this course, successful students will be able to:use the design process to plan, implement, assess and evaluate children’s learningdemonstrate and justify the sharing of learning intentions with a group/class in at least three essential learning areasidentify and use simple classroom management strategies consistent with a range of approaches to teaching and learningdemonstrate a range of appropriate questioning sequences that challenge children’s thinkinguse observation data and their knowledge of children’s development to document, analyse and report on classroom routines and children’s learningdemonstrate an understanding of a range of Models of Teaching based on current research findings

Assessment of this course will be competency based. Pass/Fail grades and comments will be provided in accordance with the College of Education guidelines and the criteria for assessment provided for students at the beginning of the course.
