Description

This is a 300 level compulsory course which focuses on professional attributes required to enter and succeed, in the early childhood profession. Key components of this course include working collaboratively with others. Key components of this course include the role of the teacher, an understanding of current issues, relevant agencies and support services, and legal responsibilities of an early childhood teacher.

Learning Outcomes

  • Reflect on and discuss a range of professional competencies and attributes related to teaching in early childhood settings.
  • Identify and analyse professional roles and responsibilities that are part of being a beginning teacher.
  • Investigate the role of relevant agencies and support services which relate to infants, toddlers, and young children and their families/whanau.

EDSP264 or HOS approval

Co-requisites

Either: (1) EDTP315 and EDTP316 and EDTP317, or (2) EDTP373 and EDTP374.

Academic integrity

All forms of cheating and dishonest practice are taken seriously and penalties will results. Students should refer to Regulation J of the General Course and Examination Regulations.

Assessment and grading system

The assignments are graded against the University A+ to E scale. Satisfactory completion of each assignment to at least a C grade is required to pass this course.

Attendance

Attendance is expected at all class sessions. Insufficient attendance in a course may make the student ineligible for teaching practice.

Evaluation

Students will be able to voluntarily complete online evaluation survey at the completion of the course.

Grade moderation

An assessment meeting will be held involving the lecturers and course co-ordinator.

Requests for extensions

Extensions are reserved for exceptional circumstances only and are not granted automatically. The student must contact the lecturer by email at least 48 hours prior to the due date. An extension form is to be completed by the student, signed by the lecturer and attached to the assignment when submitted.

Resubmissions

If work meets most (but not all) of the criteria required to pass, the student may be given the opportunity to resubmit an assessment to bring it to a passing standard. Resubmissions are restricted to work that is originally submitted on or before the due date. Late assignments will not be considered for resubmission. The original work and marking sheet must be attached to the resubmitted version. There will be no resubmits for assessment (test) on this course.
