Description

This course is an introduction to the history, philosophy and sociology of physical activity and sport. It examines the development of sporting activity in western society with particular reference to New Zealand. Sociological theories are introduced and discussed in the context of sport and society.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:
Relate the significance of various periods of history to the development of modern sport.
Explain how attitudes to physical activity and sport have been influenced by philosophy.
Define basic sociological terms and concepts as they relate to sport.
Examine important themes in contemporary society.
Demonstrate an understanding of sport from a functionalist perspective.
Explore sport by using the critical paradigm.
Demonstrate an understanding of the role, influence, benefits and significance of    sport in historical and contemporary New Zealand society.
Examine the historical significance of the modern Olympic Movement.
Define and describe the differences between play, games and sport.
Identify and critique theories of play, games and sport.
Examine sociological and psychological models which attempt to explain the needs, benefits, satisfaction's associated with participation in activity.
