Description

This course examines and analyses a range of socio-cultural issues that influence the meaning of sport, sport participation, sport achievement and the coaching environment. In particular the course will examine and analyse aspects associating sport with politics, health, gender, race, nationalism, commercialisation, commodification of the body, social class, media, education and elitism. These analyses will use a range of sociological paradigms.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of sport and social theory.
Demonstrate a sociological understanding of the social and cultural value of sport.
Demonstrate a sociological understanding of the relationships between sport, politics and identity.
Analyse the significance of sport in its contribution to gender order and gender relations.
Demonstrate a sociological understanding of the links between violence and sport.
Examine how sport and sporting bodies have become commodified as a result of commercialisation of sport.
Apply sociological understandings to the coaching environment.

Prerequisites

EDSP180 at B grade or better.
