Description

This course examines the power, meaning, social significance, moral and ethical base of sport and how it affects attitudes and values of the individual and contemporary society. In particular the course will examine, through use of a range of paradigms, the institutionalisation of sport and its moral and ethical base with an emphasis on its power and socio- cultural significance in terms of affecting individual and societal attitudes and values.

This course examines the power, meaning, social significance, moral and ethical base of sport and how it affects attitudes and values of the individual and contemporary society.  In particular the course will examine, through use of a range of paradigms, the institutionalisation of sport and its moral and ethical base with an emphasis on its power and socio- cultural significance in terms of affecting individual and societal attitudes and values.

Sport can be viewed as a ‘valued human practice’ when it has a strong moral and ethical base.  Sport has become a dominant social force both to the individual and society in terms of its potential influence on attitudes, values, and moral and ethical behaviour. In achieving a dominant position, sport has become institutionalised and its meaning, significance and moral and ethical influence has a profound and powerful affect on society.  Sport coaches need an understanding of the role, functions, meaning and ethical and moral base of sport in order to provide more meaningful programmes.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of Olympism and its ideals.
Examine moral significance in sport.
Explain and critique the educative value of sport.
Demonstrate an understanding of ethical decision making and moral reasoning.
Examine values in sport.
Critique character building and its meaning in sport.
Examine and critique the notion of fair play and ergogenic aids.
Critique societal influence on attitudes.
