Description

This is a 200 level compulsory course that focuses on the newest practical application of the theoretical knowledge in College courses and is closely linked to Professional Studies 2. Teaching Practice provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate an understanding of the responsibilities of the early childhood teacher in recognising and honouring the articles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the principles of Te Whaariki.

Learning Outcomes

By the conclusion of the course students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate a commitment to personal and professional growth by setting, reflecting upon and evaluating progress towards appropriate professional goals.
2. Demonstrate professional qualities at a satisfactory level or above.
3. Demonstrate acheivement of Year 2 competencies consistently at a satisfactory level or above.
4. Develop an understanding of administration skills related to the management of centres.
5. Develop the ability to critically reflect on their teaching practice.
6. Identify goals and strategies for developing competencies and professional qualities for EDTP316 and EDTP315.

Additional Course Outline Information

Academic integrity

All forms of cheating and dishonest practice are taken seriously and penalties will result. Students should refer to Regulation J of the General Course and Examination Regulations.

Assessment and grading system

This course is competency based.
A student will receive both formative and summative assessment during their teaching practice. The first few days usually involve formative assessment, done informally through verbal feedback or on the written end-of-week report.

The last week and final report summary in the Record Book will be summative. This feedback clearly indicates how you have responded to earlier feedback and to what extent your goals and competencies have been achieved. It is important to take time to discuss this with the Associate.

Attendance

Students must not be absent from teaching practice for more than 2 days.

In cases of unavoidable absence from a centre placement, students must inform the relevant administrator and the associate. If the absence is on the day of a visit, students must also inform the relevant visiting lecturer. This should be done before the due time of arrival at the centre, or as soon thereafter as possible.

Make-up time is completed on consecutive days and this may occur during a student's holiday period. The student must consult with his/her Professional Practice Lecturer (PPL) regarding arrangements for completing time in the centre.

The student may be required to make up any observations or other set tasks by a further visit to the centre in her/his own time. Arrangement to do this must be checked with the PPL and arranged with the associate.

Evaluation

Associates and students will be able to voluntarily complete an online evaluation survey at the completion of the course.

Associates may contact the co-ordinator and lecturers at anytime.

Grade moderation

An assessment meeting will be held involving the lecturers and course co-ordinator.

Late submission of work

Please refer to the Assessment Guidelines for Students (2010).

Other specific requirements

Full participation in preparation activities for teaching practice.

Full participation in the centre programme.

Requests for extensions

Extensions are reserved for exceptional circumstances only and are not granted automatically.

Resubmissions

Each teaching practice must be passed before the student can advance to the next teaching practice.

Aegrotat considerations

Students should refer to Regulation H of the General Course and Examination Regulations.

Aegrotat regulations make it unlikely that an Aegrotat Pass can be awarded for Professional Practice unless there are extreme circumstances.

Where to submit and collect work

Tauranga Campus
The Professional Practice Report book and associated documents must be placed in the Assignment box in the computer lab one week prior to the debriefing conference.

New Plymouth
The Professional Practice Report book and associated documents must be placed in the Assignment box at 16 Bell St one week prior to the debriefing conference.
