Description

This course extends the expectations of EDTP306 so that students take a greater role in planning and teaching a sequence of lessons, building towards teaching a unit of work with at least one class. Students continue to take an increased responsibility for class management including corrective management of students. This course requires the students to assume responsibility for all aspects of teaching a unit of work at different class levels. These responsibilities include formative and summative assessment of learning, scaffolding of learning over time and attending to the learning needs of diverse students within a class. The teaching practice portfolio includes critical reflection about their teaching that takes account of a range of evidence of student learning. The focus is also on more interactive teaching strategies within both whole class and student activity. Each student's teaching practice portfolio includes critical evaluation and reflection of their teaching. Expected outcomes are described as a set of competencies that are assessed by associate teachers and college lecturers.

Learning Outcomes

The practicum will enable students to:
1. Display an understanding of classroom routines and procedures.
2. Write and present episodic lesson plans that are curriculum specific based on clearly achievable learning outcomes and that ensures continuity and progression.
3. Plan and present lessons which cater for a range of abilities
4. Demonstrate sound knowledge of the content, skills and processes of the area(s) being taught
5. Demonstrate familiarity with the resources available in the school and its environment.
6. Demonstrate the ability to manage teaching resources, materials and equipment.
7. Demonstrate a variety of communication presentation skills.
8. Demonstrate skills in using a range of presentation technologies.
9. Demonstrate the ability to give clear instructions, directions and explanations.
10.Demonstrate appropriate class management techniques.
11.Establish and maintain a positive and inclusive classroom environment
12.Develop and employ a range of questioning skills.
13.Employ a range of teaching strategies appropriate to the subject or topic.
14.Apply the principles of assessment and assessment procedures appropriate to curriculum content and level.
15.Record and evaluate assessment
16.Understand basic school routines and procedures.
17.Use self assessment and reflection to improve teaching practice
18.Understand and use Tikanga and Te Reo where appropriate
19.Demonstrate appropriate professional behaviour in the school context
