This is a 300 level compulsory course that provides opportunities for the practical application of the theoretical knowledge gained in College courses and is closely linked to Professional Studies 3. Teaching Practice provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate an understanding of the responsibilities of the early childhood teacher in recognising and honouring the articles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the principles of Te Whaariki.
By the conclusion of the course students will be able to:1 Demonstrate a commitment to professional development by setting, reflecting upon and evaluating progress towards appropriate professional goals.2 Demonstrate professional qualities at a satisfactory level or above.3 Demonstrate attainment of year 3 competencies at a satisfactory level or above.

Course Content The course is designed to give advanced students in Education, from both liberal arts and professional backgrounds, the opportunity to pursue important educational questions in a rigorous philosophical manner. Particular emphasis will be placed on the relationship between ethics, epistemology and education. Both breadth and depth of understanding will be fostered. The course will provide an overview of major trends in the field of philosophy of education over the past half century, while also giving students the chance to examine the ideas of one or two writers in a more extended way. The course is likely to cover these areas, among others: • Trends in philosophy of education from the 1960s to the present day. • The philosophy and pedagogy of Paulo Freire. • Lyotard on knowledge, education and the postmodern condition. • Literature, philosophy and education: Dostoevsky, Hesse, Camus, and others. • Educational philosophy and intellectual life.
