Description

This is a 300 level compulsory course that provides opportunities for the practical application of the theoretical knowledge gained in College courses and is closely linked to Professional Studies 3. Teaching Practice provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate an understanding of the responsibilities of the early childhood teacher in recognising and honouring the articles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the principles of Te Whaariki.

Learning Outcomes

By the conclusion of the course students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate continuity of professional attributes at a satisfactory level, across the teaching practice (assessment 1, 2).
2. Demonstrate competence in self assessment, with reference to the expected year 1, year 2 and year 3 competencies and as a beginning teacher (assessment 3).
3. Demonstrate the professional skills of reflective practice (assessment 3).
4. Demonstrate effective self management, with reference to professional behaviour within the teaching practice setting (assessment 1, 2).
5. Demonstrate commitment to professional growth by identifying, reflecting upon and evaluating progress towards appropriate professional goals (assessment 1, 2, 3).

Additional Course Outline Information

Academic integrity

All forms of cheating and dishonest practice are taken seriously and penalties will result. Students should refer to Regulation J of the General Course and Examination Regulations.

Assessment and grading system

Students must achieve at a 'met' level for 100% of both the year level competencies and attributes in the associate report.

Students must achieve at a 'met' level for 90% of both the year level competencies and attributes in the visiting lecturer report.

Student must submit a reflective journal to a satisfactory standard.

Attendance

Attendance at the briefing session is required. Students must attend a debriefing conference, following teaching practice.

Evaluation

Associates and students will be able to voluntarily complete an online evaluation survey at the completion of the course.

Associates may contact the co-ordinator and lecturers at anytime.

Grade moderation

An assessment meeting will be held involving the lecturers and course co-ordinator.

Late submission of work

Please refer to the Assessment Guidelines for Students (2010).

Other specific requirements

Students must not be absent from teaching practice for more than 2 days. Students may complete additional days to accommodation absences. This must be approved by the co-ordinator for this course.

Requests for extensions

Extensions are reserved for exceptional circumstances only and are not granted automatically. The student must contact the lecturer by email, at least 48 hours prior to the due date. An extension form is to be completed by the student, signed by the lecturer and attached to the assignment when submitted. Alternatively, a copy of the lecturer's email approving the extension can be used.

No resubmissions.

Aegrotat considerations

Students should refer to Regulation H of the General Course and Examination Regulations.

Aegrotat regulations make it unlikely that an Aegrotat Pass can be awarded for Professional Practice unless there are extreme circumstances.

Where to submit and collect work

The journal will be electronically submitted prior to the debriefing conference. All teaching practice documentation will be brought to the debriefing conference.
