This is a compulsory workshop that introduces students to examining the place of the education system in a Treaty-based New Zealand society. As a background to a better understanding of bi-cultural classroom practice students investigate: the history and content of the Treaty of Waitangi; subsequent historical and social developments in Aotearoa as they relate to the development of a bicultural society; the aspirations of Maori in terms of education in Aotearoa. The course involves active preparation, builds on students' existing knowledge, and encourages them to take ownership of, and responsibility for, their further learning.
