This course is a requirement for BA students majoring in Education and introduces the foundational concepts and processes of learning from three different perspectives within the field of education. Class sessions will involve lecture, discussion, videos and activities designed to distinguish major concepts and ideas.
Goals of the CourseTo introduce students to a study of learning as approached from multiple perspectives:The psychological approach to learning, which concentrates on understanding behavioural, cognitive and neural changes which occur when the individual learns. The developmental approach to learning, which concentrates on how infants, children, adolescents and adults learn, and learning differences across the lifespan.The socio-cultural approach to learning, which considers how learning is mediated by society and culture

AssessmentStudents will complete two of the three essays and also sit an open-book and open-note examination. Students may decide to complete all three essays, and the highest two marks will be used as the essay part of the overall course grade. Students cannot pass the course as a whole without completing the examination. All assessment information in this course outline should be read in conjunction with the relevant University of Canterbury policies, in particular, the UC Calendar (2009), General Course Examination Regulations on pp 74-88.
Course ReadingsThree booklets of required readings (one from each perspective) will be available for purchase as Course Readers. These readings and other materials will be available for download from Blackboard. If you have questions about the readings, please contact the Lecturer for the particular perspective module.
Relationship to other Courses This is the foundation course in Learning Stream in terms of its content and progression of knowledge. It is also a required course for the major of Education in the Bachelor of Arts. It leads on to courses in current and critical issues. Learning Outcomes Students will demonstrate an understanding of the foundational concepts of learning from all three major perspectives. Students will distinguish the major aspects of a psychological approach to learning; Students will distinguish the major aspects of a developmental approach to learning; Students will demonstrate an understanding of the impact of social inequalities on learning. Course Content The content of the course consists of lectures and readings. The essays and exam are designed to assess students’ familiarity with this material and ability to critically engage with it.
