Description

This course is a requirement for BA students majoring in Education and introduces the foundational concepts and processes of learning from three different perspectives within the field of education. Class sessions will involve lecture, discussion, videos and activities designed to distinguish major concepts and ideas.

Learning Outcomes

Goals of the Course
To introduce students to a study of learning as approached from multiple perspectives:
The psychological approach to learning, which concentrates on understanding behavioural, cognitive and neural changes which occur when the individual learns.
The developmental approach to learning, which concentrates on how infants, children, adolescents and adults learn, and learning differences across the lifespan.
The socio-cultural approach to learning, which considers how learning is mediated by society and culture

Relationship to other Courses This is the foundation course in Learning Stream in terms of its content and progression of knowledge. It is also a required course for the major of Education in the Bachelor of Arts. It leads on to courses in current and critical issues. Learning Outcomes Students will demonstrate an understanding of the foundational concepts of learning from all three major perspectives. Students will distinguish the major aspects of a psychological approach to learning; Students will distinguish the major aspects of a developmental approach to learning; Students will demonstrate an understanding of the impact of social inequalities on learning. Course Content The content of the course consists of lectures and readings. The essays and exam are designed to assess students’ familiarity with this material and ability to critically engage with it.
