This course will explore ways in which wellbeing, resilience, and positive developmental trajectories may be promoted from infancy through adolescence. Current research and theoretical models will be used to explore a number of critical issues related to health and wellbeing in a New Zealand context from a developmental perspective.
EDUC204 integrates key theories and evidence-based research within developmental, educational, and positive psychology. What is well-being? What is resilience? How do children and adolescents cope? And how might they thrive? This course explores these thought-provoking questions (and more!) by exploring a variety of educational contexts from the classroom to informal learning environments. EDUC204 takes a holistic perspective to identify supportive conditions that promote academic achievement and personal well-being in Aotearoa New Zealand and around the world.
1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the foundational tenets of resilience, positive youth development, and strength-based theories. 2. Students will apply the core concepts of developmental, educational and positive psychology to the promotion of well-being and health.3. Students will demonstrate understanding of the basic principles for evaluating evidence-based literature. 4. Students will demonstrate an emerging understanding of the multidimensional and complex nature of developmental, educational and positive psychology processes that contribute to well-being and health.
This course will provide students with an opportunity to develop the Graduate Attributes specified below:
Critically competent in a core academic discipline of their award
Students know and can critically evaluate and, where applicable, apply this knowledge to topics/issues within their majoring subject.
