Description

Studies of counselling and psychological theories and their implication for practice. Practice in the skills of a problem-management model of helping.

In this course students learn and practise some introductory helping skills while they are learning about several major theories of counselling and psychotherapy. Students explore the stages and skills of an intentional model of helping and the essentials of good practice, such as, preparation for the first contact and recognition of the client’s perspective, self evaluation skills and specific helping skills (interviewing, working therapeutically, working with systems, working with people of different ages and cultures). There will be an emphasis on experiential learning such as role play and self evaluation of a video.

Learning Outcomes

This course has three major aims:
1. To explore issues relevant to the practice of counselling and psychotherapy.
2. To provide students with the basic skills to conduct an effective therapeutic interview in the context of their developing understanding of theory.
3. To gain an integrated understanding of several major theories of counselling and psychological interventions.

Assessment

Assessment Due Date Percentage  Description
Online Skills Test 15% The aim of this assignment is to give you the opportunity to identify skills, and their intention, and evaluate their effect when viewing a counselling excerpt. The test will be available from 14 May 2018 and be due by 18 May 2018.
Integrated Theory Assignment 45% Part A: Class Participation/Group presentations (Tues Jul 24th) 5%. Part B: Written Integrated Theory Assignment (Fri Aug 1th) 40%. The aim of this assignment is to enable you to demonstrate your ability to integrate elements of the theories covered in the course into a coherent and personalised integrated theory of counselling. Keeping a learning journal and recording your responses to the "Inner reflections" questions in each chapter of the course text as you progress through the course will greatly assist you to prepare for this assignment.
Video and Analysis 14 Sep 2018 40% The video assignment is one in which you demonstrate your ability to use a range of purposeful counselling skills and interpret their impact in a counselling interview. Specific instructions for this assignment will be distributed in Semester 2.

Assignments are graded against the university 11 point scale A+ to E Grade Range.

Attendance

N.B. A minimum of 80% class attendance is required to pass this course.

Grade moderation

Grades will be internally moderated.

Late submission of work

All late submissions will attract a penalty of one Grade (eg from A to A-) per week or part thereof, unless special permission has been granted. Such permission will normally only be granted in exceptional circumstances, such as illness supported by a doctor's certificate. Assignments submitted more than two weeks late will not be accepted.

Requests for extensions

Requests for extensions will not be considered unless there are exceptional circumstances, such as illness supported by a doctor's certificate. Work pressure of competing assignments will NOT be considered as exceptional circumstances. Extensions will not be granted for more than two weeks.

Resubmissions

Students will be permitted a maximum of one submission, only for assignments which have been failed. A penalty of one grade will apply.

Aegrotat Consideration

It is not possible to apply for aegrotat considerations for this course.

Where to submit and collect work

Assignments are to be handed in at the scheduled class meeting on the due date.
