A first course in the methods and applications of engineering mathematics. Topics include calculus, linear algebra, and modelling techniques. This Course is designed for engineering students who have done well in NCEA Mathematics with calculus.
EMTH118 is a course dealing with ideas in one-variable calculus and in linear algebra which have applications in engineering. Topics: linear equations and matrices; vector geometry; functions, limits, and continuity; differentiation; integration.Suitable backgrounds for EMTH118 include good NCEA level 3 calculus results (see entry recommendations for recent school leavers) or a pass in MATH101. A pass in EMTH118 allows entry into EMTH119, which are both compulsory courses for the engineering intermediate year. It is also recommended preparation for EMTH171.
Students who have succeeded in this course will be able to:Define the key concepts in:solving systems of linear equationsmatrix algebravector geometryfunctions and their inverseslimits, derivatives and integrals of one-variable functions.Describe and interpret:the connection between linear algebra and the geometry of intersection problemsthe relationships between the derivative and integral of a one-variable function.Use techniques from the course (including the use of MATLAB or MAPLE where appropriate) to:solve systems of linear equations, either by elimination or by matrix algebrasolve intersection and projection problems involving lines and planesevaluate limits of functionsfind derivatives and use them in a variety of applicationsfind integrals and use them in a variety of applicationssolve first order differential equations, and use them in a variety of applications.Identify the appropriate method of solution for problems in linear equations or one-variable calculus.Evaluate the significance of mathematical solutions in the context of given problem statements.
