Description

A first course in the methods and applications of engineering mathematics. Topics include calculus, linear algebra, and modelling techniques. This Course is designed for engineering students who have done well in NCEA Mathematics with calculus.

An introductory course in calculus and linear algebra that is designed primarily for students who have done well in NCEA Level 3 Mathematics with Calculus. This course deals with basic ideas in calculus and linear algebra which have applications in many areas of engineering. Topics include linear equations and matrices; vector geometry; functions, limits, and continuity; differentiation; integration; and functions of two or more variables.
A pass in EMTH118 allows entry into EMTH119, which are both compulsory courses for the engineering intermediate year. It is also recommended preparation for MATH170 / EMTH171.

Suitable backgrounds for EMTH118 include good NCEA level 3 calculus results see entry recommendations for recent school leavers or a pass in MATH101.

Learning Outcomes

  • to consolidate and extend the ideas and techniques of calculus and its applications
  • to introduce the concepts of linear algebra and its applications
  • to increase understanding of the mathematical foundations of the topics studied
  • to practise the application of mathematical concepts and techniques to understanding and solving problems
  • to introduce computer software used to solve mathematical problems
