Sustainable building design philosophy, strategies and practice. Materials, water, airflow and energy in buildings. High-performance, low energy buildings. Building performance simulation. Coordination and integration with other building design disciplines.
This course applies advanced principles of building engineering physics and energy modelling to the practice of sustainable building design. A systems approach is taken to developing solutions to sustainable building design challenges, with a focus on the early stages of design. The effects of building form, materials, systems, occupants and environment on building energy performance are examined using case studies and simulation analyses. The course covers the following topics:• Sustainable building design principles, objectives and strategies.• Energy and airflow in buildings.• Building energy performance modelling and analysis.• Sustainable building technologies and systems.
Developing building design concepts, strategies and technical solutions that respond to sustainability objectives and performance targets.Modelling and analysing the effects of proposed building designs on the energy and environmental performance of buildings. Communicating the physical basis for the energy and environmental performance of buildings through applying knowledge of energy, moisture and airflow in buildings and the relationship between building design and building energy performance.
